300+ Surf Bands and Still Counting

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

It has always been the goal around here to play instrumental surf music by virtually any band that, well, plays instrumental surf music or a reasonable facsimile thereof. Recently, we were taking stock of whose tunes we’ve been playing at http://www.live365.com/stations/2izzy2 and whose we weren’t, but should be. So, if you have a band that’s cranked out some tasty surf tunes and we haven’t gotten around to playing your music yet, fear not. We will…eventually! If you would like to “nudge” us into doing so, sooner rather than later, feel free to smack us upside the head with an e-mail. It works well! Along the way, we came up with excuses for those bands we’ve missed.

  • We don’t speak Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese or Finnish very well (but, we’re workin’ on it).
  • The CDs we want are long out of print and we’re waiting ’til we can find a copy for less than the one selling on Amazon for $50+!
  • Some bands don’t answer their e-mail.
  • Websites that look active, aren’t.
  • Digital downloads have always been the last resort… too many hard drive crashes over the years.

Here’s the list as of May 31st…

2009 Surf Tunes of the Year!

Friday, December 11th, 2009

The 2009 instrumental surf tunes of the year as voted by you!

Each month, just for the fun of it, we’ve been doing a quick post identifying which tune has been the most popular over the preceding month. With a few tie breaking considerations, the winning tune has been determined primarily from the number of thumb’s up votes received… which is why we say, “If you like the tune, give it a thumb’s up vote in your Live365 player window.” This has worked out well since we started the station last December and should do so in the future.

Here’s the list, by tune, album and band, of those winners over this past year…

12/08 Shark Breath from Time Surfin’ by The Breakaways

1/09 Bolero For a King from Coming Up For Air by The Surf Kings

2/09 Bombay Highway, Part II from Shark Attack!!! by The Surf Lords

3/09 Titus from Gun Sho Gun by Secret Samurai

4/09 Prima Vara from Headin’ Out by The Vara-Tones

5/09 Lil’ Waquin from Warning: Heavy Surf Advisory by The Concaves

6/09 Two Angels from Eleki! by The Mach IV

7/09 Back Home from Guitars In Orbit by Los Twang! Marvels

8/09 Another Time, Another Place from Locked & Loaded by The Penetrators

9/09 Saucers In the Sunset from Surf vs. the Flying Saucers by The Urban Surf Kings

10/09 Mimi’s Theme from Fathom This! by The Fathoms

11/09 Catharsis from Las Excentricas Aventuras Del Profesor Volcanova by The Kilaueas

There you have it! Twelve tracks from the best surf music compilation CD never produced. This list reflects the true appreciation by our listening audience for some really fine music and a no-prize nod to the bands that they have done well.

Our thanks and congratulations go out to everyone involved! Happy Holidays!
