It’s TV Time Again #1
Wednesday, January 7th, 2009So, anyway… if you’ve been listening to the commercial laden broadcast over at our MutantSurfing.com radio station, you have undoubtedly heard the ads for the upcoming, long awaited new season of 24 and Jack Bauer on Fox. I can only think of a single show in previous TV history that created such a high level of anticipation. The series, of course, was Route 66. This program featured Martin (pre Adam-12) Milner as Tod Stiles and George (pre public restroom) Maharris as Buzz Murdock, with Glenn (write my character out of Dallas) Corbett as Lincoln Chase in the later episodes.
Route 66 as a TV show was a vehicle for showcasing guest stars, cross country locations and dramatic scripts about two guys on the road, meeting people and finding their purpose in life…or, some such nonsense.
If you are old enough to remember this show, then let’s face it- the real stars of the show were the Corvettes these two guys drove! I can’t remember a single story line of the series, but I remember anxiously looking forward each season to the unveiling of the latest model ‘Vette and watching them cruise (the cars, not the actors) on a weekly basis.
Airing from 1960-1964, the first season starred a light blue ’58 that was bequeathed to the Stiles character by his father. Each subsequent season then featured that new model Corvette supposedly in a red, but really fawn beige (it photographed better for black & white TV) color. Having once owned a fawn beige 1961 ‘Vette, you can probably guess which season, in retrospect, was my favorite.
This, of course, identifies one of the problems with TV today. It’s not the interruptions by writers’ strikes, sex, violence, bad language or even superfluous reality shows. It’s simply the lack of classic Corvettes!
