Goodguys 28th All American Get Together

It’s officially springtime when the car shows begin and not a day earlier! For us, spring and the hot rod season began the weekend of the Goodguys 28th All American Get Together at the Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, California. Since we can never resist using a pun when the opportunity presents itself, you might say this event was a case of “the Goodguys, the bad and the ugly”. Groan!

The ugly. When we attend car shows, we like to shoot as many snapshots of the cars as we can. We do so on the fly, with your basic little Sony Cyber-shot camera. We’re going for quantity vs. quality as we stick and move, and dodge the crowd. This time around, we didn’t do so well. The camera batteries were dying at inopportune times, the indoor shots came out crappy (didn’t do the cars any justice, whatsoever) and way too much sun reflecting from chrome parts. We wound up with about 80 pictures worth keeping. We missed more than we made. Oh well, some is better than none, right? But, there should be a bundle of other pictures taken at this event to be found on the web if you look. Also, with us, notes are seldom taken to help with recollection. Was that a ’65 or ’66 ‘Vette with those knock-offs? They couldn’t all be ’32 Fords, could they?… had to be a ’30 or ’31 in there somewhere, right? Were they steel or plastic? I know those had to be ’36 Fords, but was that next one a ’37 or a ’38? The Mercs… were they ’49s or ’50s? And, so on… So, don’t look for many tags to identify the pictured cars!

The bad. No music! C’mon guys, even the small, local car shows have bands playing live or tunes piped in. For the price of admission you could afford to add a little, let’s say… surf music to round out the day! Car shows and tunes go together like clutches and flywheels,  like heads and headers, like cams and lifters… you get the idea. I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t need to worry about some amplified music drowning out the sound of that funny car firing up!

The good. The weather was perfect for spending the whole day meandering about. Nice folks to chat it up with and plenty of rides for sale if you have the coin. There was more to see than you’d have time to look at… seriously! We saw one of the nicest cars from the show a few blocks outside the exit, after we’d left.  It looked to be about a 1951 Kaiser Henry J that had been customized into a woody station wagon. Absolutely gorgeous.

More good news is that there are three more “Goodguys” events scheduled for this venue, later this year. We’ll be there. In the meantime, here’s a link to pictures. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mutantsurfing/sets/72157623720522702/
