Our Favorite 1960’s Car Tune… “Little GTO”
Instrumental surf music aside for a minute, our favorite car tune from the 1960s is “Little GTO” by Ronnie and the Daytonas. In fact, if I’m not mistaken, I believe this was the first 45 record I ever purchased.
A couple things from today’s random brain spark…
First, here is a really nice video with the song, complete with a fine assortment of those Pontiacs we all know and love. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_FSicQWimU
Second, these may or may not be some of the song’s original lyrics:
Little GTO, you’re really lookin’ fine
Hydraulic lifters and a four speed, and a 389
Listen to her tachin’ up now, listen to her whi-yi-yine
Come on and turn it on, wind it up, float the valves, GTO
Okay, before you GTO fanatics go nuts and start to crucify me, I’ve owned a couple of ‘66 Goats, complete with their obligatory trunk leaks. So, I remember how it was!
Having a red line well under 6000 rpm was a bummer, but, the exhaust “burble” at idle was sweet and the radio’s reverb unit more than made up for any lack of the car’s performance.
Hence, the current appreciation for reverb soaked instrumental surf music…
