Recently, responding to the Double Crown Records poll http://www.doublecrownrecords.com/2009/11/06/top-10-surfinstro-songs-albums-of-the-2000s/ , we offered up our ten favorite instrumental surf tunes over the past ten years. Our selections in no particular order of preference were:
1. Catharsis by the Kilaueas (2005)
2. Cross Steppin’ by the Eliminators (2003)
3. Jaba Point by the Surf Kings (2004)
4. Barney Rumble by the Tarantulas (2000)
5. Step Into Liquid by the Reckless Reefers (2006)
6. Into the Blue Sparkle By Slacktone (2001)

Of course, we managed to overlook:
11. 10 Miles To Nags Head by Reverb Galaxy
12. Amber Waves by Frankie and the Poolboys
13. Saucers In the Sunset by The Urban Surf Kings, and a few more no doubt!
Now, keeping with the spirit of these lists, here are our top ten favorite albums/CDs for the decade:
1. Las Excentricas Aventuras Del Profesor Volcanova by the Kilaueas
2. Nor’easter by Mister Neutron
3. Somewhere In California by the Torquays
4. Into the Blue Sparkle by Slacktone
5. Revenge of the Surf Guitar by Martin Cilia
6. Changing Tides by Splashback
7. People of Earth, We Are The Neptunes by the Neptunes
8. Fathom This! by the Fathoms
9. Aligretosurfati by Tubestone
10. Surf and Destroy by the Pyronauts
Plus, whichever albums we forgot this time!
2000-2009 was a great decade for surf music and 2010 looks very promising. For that matter, the 1990s were none too shabby, either. One of these days, we’ll have to put together those retrospective lists as well!
