What’s a Good Place to Start?
This came up in conversation the other day while discussing instrumental surf music.
“My kid’s getting into surf music and I want to get him four or five CDs for his birthday. I don’t know which ones to choose. Which ones do you think are best?”
Okay, first, are you sure its your kid we’re talkin’ about? Anyhow, as to which the “best” surf CDs are, would be fodder for a long drawn out debate. It’s all a matter of opinion.
However, if you would like both enough quality and quantity to be certain there’s an abundance of tunes to be enjoyed, we’d recommend starting off with the following:
1. Somewhere In California by the Torquays- 19 tracks
2. Surf Sensation by the Mel-Tones (don’t let the Sponge Bob references deter you for one second)- 33 tracks
3. Time Surfin’ by the Breakaways- 20 tracks
4. To Surf and Protect by the Bananas-21 tracks
5. Into the Blue Sparkle by Slacktone-17 tracks
And, there you go, five CDs and 110 tracks. We would challenge anybody to find fault with these picks!
Happy Birthday!
